England hit one-day international world record score of 444 against Pakistan as Alex Hales dazzles

Eoin Morgan's men passed the 443 that Sri Lanka scored against Holland in 2006 with Alex Hales hitting a record 171 to break Robin Smith's 23-year-old record

England have broken the world record for the highest one-day international score ever with a sensational innings of 444/3 against Pakistan in the third ODI at Trent Bridge.

Alex Hales led the way when he broke the record for England's highest ever one-day innings, hitting 171 to surpass the 167 that Robin Smith claimed against Australia in 1993.

Playing on his home ground, the Notts batsman launched Hasan Ali for four to ease past Smith's mark, but was out on the very next ball when Hasan trapped him.

That ended hopes of a maiden ODI double-hundred from an England batsman, but his remarkable innings was a huge boost for Eoin Morgan's hopes of wrapping up a series win.

Hales broke Robin Smith's 23-year-old record

Hales put England on the way to a world record total

Hales enjoyed a second-wicket stand of 248 with Joe Root, hitting 22 fours and four sixes from 122 balls as the hosts piled on the runs in the third of the five-game series.

Root maneuvered his way to a fifth consecutive ODI half-century, but was out soon after Hales, falling for 85.

The Buttler did it: Jos hit the record-breaking runs
But the pair falling did little to slow down England, as Butler was the next to take centre stage with a swashbuckling 90 not out, alongside skipper Morgan who remained at the crease with him on 57.
That meant England not only bettered their highest-ever ODI total of 408 for nine against New Zealand last year, but also outscored the 443 that Sri Lanka claimed against Holland in 2006.
